Postdoc within Entomology and Biological Control

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen (UCPH) invites applications for a position as postdoc within entomology and biological control with focus on using entomopathogenic fungi as a tool in IPM for control of larvae of the cabbage root fly (Delia radicum) in the soil-root interphase. The postdoc will be part of the newly funded European network project FlyIPM under the initiative C-IPM (Coordinated Integrated Pest Management in Europe) which includes 8 countries. A PhD position is available in the Sophia Agrobiotech Institute (CNRS-INRA-University of Nice Sophia Antipolis) under the joint supervision of  two teams, ESIM (Evolution and Specificity of  Multitrophic Interactions) and Symbiosis (Plant bacterial symbiosis) in the context of the international SIGNALIFE PhD Programme (http://signalife.unice.fr/).

The project, „Cross-talk between aphid facultative symbiosis and plant nitrogen fixation symbiosis in the Acyrthosiphon pisumMedicago truncatula interaction“ will take advantage of the experience and skills of the two teams to explore a new question : how the plant nitrogen fixation symbiosis and the aphid facultative symbiosis interfere in terms of induced phenotypic effects and modulate the interaction between the pea aphid and its legume host plant.

The scholarship is attached to a new research project: Microbial growth-regulation of Abies nordmanniana. The Ph.D. scholarship focuses on plant-microbe interactions with specific emphasis on microorganisms able to alter phytohormone levels in the plants. Hormone producing microorganisms will be identified from the rhitzophere, and their ability to influence plant growth and development tested.

Dear colleagues,

I’m an assistant professor in plant pathology with a broad background, interest, and experience in plant health problem diagnosis and disease management. I have an experience in pathogen identification using established and/or innovative techniques. I use to travel to multiple locations for research and extension programs (CV attached).


We
recently isolated endophytic bacteria from spontaneously growing plants that are potential biocontrol agents against many plant pathogenic bacteria, fungi and against Phytophthora infestans. These bacteria are also capable of promoting the growth of crops. An article submitted to the journal „Phytopathologia mediterranea“, was accepted with minor revisions (abstract attached). In parallel, we isolated endophytic bacteria and fungi of date palm that have different biological properties; biocontrol agents, tolerance to abiotic stresses (salinity and drought) and growth promotion.I wish to continue my search in a laboratory in a foreign country in the frame of a sabbatical (12 months) from September 2016, but screening of applications will begin February 2016.

The research to be undertaken in the future will mainly concern:
  • Characterization of endophytic bacteria and fungi and identification of their ability to protect plants against pathogen attack and to promote plant growth.
  • Study of the mechanisms of biocontrol studying interactions between endophytes as potential control agents and pathogens of economically significant crops (wheat, potato, corn, rice, tomato …).
  • Determination of biochemical and genetic mechanisms for biocontrol of soilborne and foliar pathogens by antagonists and development of improved biocontrol systems and technology for application of biocontrol systems in the field. 
Please note that aside from my regular salary, no further financial support will be necessary.

Bacterial-fungal endophyte interactions and impact on plant resistance

BestPass: Boosting plant-endophyte stability, compatibility and performance across scales

Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH is offering a PhD scholarship in Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions with expected commencement 1 February 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD will be awarded by the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in cooperation with AIT.

Consortia of bacterial and fungal endophytes are expected to impact plant resistance against pathogenic microorganisms. This project will study whether and how endophytic bacteria can modify fungal interactions leading to plant resistance, and will decipher bacterial factors required for endophytic colonization and tripartite interaction.

Objectives
To combine bacteria and fungi for enhancing plant (potato and tomato) resistance against phytopathogens and to decipher bacterial factors required for endophytic colonization, plant resistance and effects on endophytic fungi. Specifically, the tasks are as follows:

  • to combine antagonistic biocontrol agents and plant resistance-inducing endophyte (Piriformospora indica) and to investigate the plant response at a phenomenological and molecular level.
  • to co-formulate bacteria and endophytic fungi for field application
  • to determine which bacterial factors, by making knock-out mutants, can affect bacterial colonization of fungi, and if these factors affect resistance of potato and tomato plants and colonization by the endophytic fungus indica.

„I am a Kenyan student registered at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to pursue a PhD in the field of crop protection using endophytic microorganisms. My research is on isolation and characterization of both endophytic and rhizospheric fungi and bacteria from plants growing along the shores of Kenyan soda lakes and testing for their ability to promote crop adaptation to both salt tolerance and disease and pest resistance.

My earlier research at the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) under the Applied Bioprospecting Programme was based on isolation of soil microorganisms and their bioactive metabolites for crop protection against pathogens and pests. I am currently working with the Kenya Wildlife Service, under the Biodiversity Research and Monitoring Division, Biotechnology Section.

I would like to apply for a DAAD scholarship under the sandwich model and the requirement is that I get a supervisor from Germany in the line of my studies.
